Dental prophylaxis

The aim of dental prophylaxis is to prevent possible diseases such as periodontitis, bad breath or tooth decay and to prevent them from getting worse.

How do deposits form and what can you do?

The causative bacteria settle in and on plaque and food particles in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth between the teeth and in periodontal pockets.

In principle, brushing your teeth twice a day at home is a form of dental prophylaxis. Refraining from smoking and eating a sugar-free diet are also precautionary measures for your dental health, i.e. ultimately prophylaxis.

Unfortunately, you can’t get everywhere with a toothbrush or even with dental floss. The dentist or the dental hygienist, however, does.

What is done during prophylaxis?

In a dental prophylaxis, all surfaces, gaps and the gum pockets are cleaned and freed from everything that does not belong there, which is why the prophylaxis is colloquially called professional tooth cleaning.

Special devices such as ultrasound, powder jet and water jet as well as gentle chemicals are used to remove deposits, plaque, unsightly discolouration and tartar.

You don’t have to be afraid of pain, because teeth cleaning is usually completely painless. However, if you have exposed tooth necks or are very sensitive, we would also be happy to give you a local anesthetic.

How long, how often and why?

Normally, prophylaxis takes about an hour and you should schedule it twice a year. In addition to cleaning, another advantage of dental prophylaxis is that we take a thorough look inside your mouth and, if necessary, discover small problems before they become expensive and painful problems.

Because removing tartar, polishing and cleaning pockets puts a strain on the tooth enamel, we will give you a remineralizing protective coating on your teeth as part of the prophylaxis. That is why you should refrain from eating and drinking for about an hour after leaving our practice.

Healthy teeth are more important than you think

Healthy teeth are extremely important for overall health, as periodontitis has been shown to significantly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

A healthy set of teeth with well-groomed teeth is your first calling card when you get to know each other, both privately and professionally. And we want you to shine!
